7 Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips
Carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning in the United States. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless and colorless gas created when different types of fuel, such as heating oil, propane, wood and natural gas, are burned without having enough air in order to complete combustion. Home appliances such as stoves and clothes dryers can also generate carbon monoxide.
Be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning which can include:
Flu-like symptoms/fatigue- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Fainting
- Visual changes
Follow these precautionary safety tips to help keep your family and friends safe and warm this winter season:
- Have your heating system, chimney and flue inspected annually.
- Install a Carrier carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home.
- Test your CO alarms at least once a month and replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Have your furnace and other gas-powered appliances, such as ovens or cook tops inspected for proper ventilation.
- DO NOT utilize gas-powered engines in confined spaces such as basements or garages, even with the doors open.
- Never burn gas or charcoal grills indoors.
- During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow build-up.
