6 Home Cooling Money-Saving Tips
The dog days of summer are here - hot, sticky and sweaty. If you are having flashbacks about how oppressive the summer of 2010 was, you are not alone. The Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University found that 28 Northeastern cities set record highs for average temperature from March - August 2010. We all know we do not have a dry heat in the Northeast. No wonder I love the comfort of my air conditioned home.
As the heat index rises, air conditioning feels so good, except it costs money. Through personal experience and additional facts from Energy Star, I have listed helpful ways to save money and reduce energy consumption. Added bonus - some of these are DIY:
1. Change your air filter
Dirty filters waste energy by slowing down the air flow through the system, making it work harder, and increasing the chances of expensive maintenance or worse, early system failure. Check your filter monthly during peak times changing it every 1-3 months.
2. Use ceiling fans
Raising your thermostat by 2 degrees while using a ceiling fan can save up to 14% on cooling costs.
3. Clear the outdoor coil of debris
Leaves, cottonwood and other materials can clog your outdoor coil. This debris causes your system to have longer run cycles which increases energy costs, shortens its useful life and reduces it cooling capabilities.
4. Seal your ductwork
Ductwork is usually the biggest energy waster. Save up to 20% by using duct sealant or metal-backed foil tape to seal the seams and duct connections, and then wrap the ducts in insulation.
5. Install a programmable thermostat
Besides fighting global warming, some new programmable thermostats are designed to fit into a room's overall décor quite seamlessly and when properly used can save about $180 yearly in energy costs.
6. Have an expert contractor tune-up your HVAC equipment annually
Preventative maintenance can improve the comfort and efficiency of your heating and cooling system, thus saving you on energy costs. You can find a listing of local Carrier dealers here.
Furthermore, as the heat continues to set records, consider upgrading your old condenser to a new energy-efficient unit. If your home has the very common 8 SEER air conditioner and you install a new 16 SEER air conditioner, you can save up to 50% on your cooling costs. The more it is used, the faster it pays for itself. It's almost like having an ATM outside your home.
